Travel Day
TO THE ANCIENT CITY OF ALEXANDRIA
Well, I, as the representative of THE READERS OF HOMER, leave in one hour to fly from John F. Kennedy airport to Alexandria, via Heathrow in London. I have not been in Egypt since the days of my early marriage, days in the 1950's, when it was still possible to walk around the pyramids and meet no other tourists, when we could climb to the top of the Cheops Pyramid, and did, with the help of a guide who hauled us up the enormous stones. I was pregnant then, too, with my son , Reinhard, who now is Chief of Operations for our Homer events.
All I remember from the one day I spent in Alexandria then was a yelling camel, stuck in a tram track and an angry owner. If I remember correctly, I thought I could help the struggling caught camel somehow, until the owner yelled at me, too. And I desisted.
I will write daily some little observation as we go about seeing how we can best serve this city, the new Bibliotheca Alexandrina, so near to the site of the great Ancient Library.

Dear Kathyn,
This evening I picked up my daughter Kathryn, your namesake, at the airport. She is here in Sacramento for Christmasfrom Austin, where she is working on Masters/PHD in Asian Literature. Somehow in the ride from the airport I was talking about you and Hans. And, that Kate got her name from you. Being a modern person, she suggested that I look you on the internet. As an ancient trial lawyer stuff like that never occurs to me. Anyway, there you were for pages all over Google.I thought I would write, which I never do. The kid has a journel she keeps somewhere and I thought, if you are prolific, that she and you might want to communicate. You can reach me at JONPLAW@ol.com or Kate at sibylla@gmail.com
